At the UN’s request, Norway planned to assign its medical support unit through the Red Cross and sent to Korea the Norwegian medical support unit, which consisted of Colonel Herman Ramstad and 83 soldiers with a policy of rotating the posted personnel every 6 months. After officially initiating their medical activities in Korea, starting from July 9th, 1951, a yearly number of 623 soldiers were deployed not only to treat over 90,000 injured soldiers but to also perform 9,600 surgeries in field hospitals. After the ceasefire, the Norwegian medical staff made countless efforts in treating civilians. The exhibition on the Norwegian medical support troop was planned to remember and express our gratitude towards them. This exhibition will provide us with a valuable opportunity to think back once again on the pain and suffering resulting from war and the importance of peace by looking at the devoted actions of the Norwegian medical support troop amidst the whirlpool of warfare. |
