As commander of the United States 2nd Logistics Support Base in Busan during the Korean War, General Richard S. Whitcomb (1894-1982) restlessly dedicated himself to the reconstruction of the Republic of Korea with his devoted efforts in helping to rebuild Busan in the aftermath of the war. Not only had he established many orphanages for children orphaned by the war, but he also understood the need for a medical facility and helped to establish Maryknoll Hospital in Busan. Furthermore, he had also contributed to the establishment of the Busan National University by persuading President Syngman Rhee and the governor of Gyeongsangnam-do at the time to donate approximately 1.65 million m2 of land in Jangjeon-dong. Moreover, after providing military supplies to the victims of the massive fire that had broken out near the Busan Station, General Whitcomb was summoned to a court hearing in the United States where he emphasized that “War is not done with the sword nor the rifle. Genuine triumph is for the sake of the people in the country,” which has become a famous line. The purpose of this exhibition is to present General Richard S. Whitcomb and to share our gratitude for his philanthropic devotion.
